How to let other blogs know that we are linking to them? Alternative to trackback

In the previous post I talked about the trackback feature to let other blogs know that you link to them. If you found this feature bit confusing, there is an alternative way to notify blogs.

WordPress has a built-in Ping feature. This feature allows you to pingback to a certain blog about your entry. This is achieved by posting blog’s permalink (usually the blog posts unique URL) within your content. That is it. You don’t have to do anything else.

To be able to benefit from Pingback feature in WordPress, go to Settings > Discussions and enable the options as below.

pingback

After posting the link on your blog, you can check if it works by going to the blog that you linked to. All you have to do is, go to comment section in that blog. See if your brief sample of text from your blog is there. It should look something like this:

... The Text From Your Blog ...

One thing to pay attention with pingbacks

Remember, pinback and trackbacks are very similar. When you pingback to a blog, make sure you don’t trackback or visa versa. Because, if you do both, that means you will to similar content posted in the comment section. Many blog owners can perceive this as spamming.
